Only as much as a targe (it's used in the same way), and not nearly as much as a handheld (no forearm support), which transfers the blow to the wrist.
Broken wrists were common in ye olde days. Note how jousting is now done with shoulder shields. Still painful, but less chance of damage.

Indeed. Also, the Highlander targe is used exclusively by the Scottish Highlanders from 13th through 16th century before being banned in the 17th century after the Jacobite Uprising.

If you're really going for the buckler, you should try to find a way to mount the shield so that Saber is holding it in her hand as opposed to strapping it to her arm. Of course, that also means she can't use her off-hand for double-hand blows anymore.

There is a shield used by the romans called a parmula shield. It seems to be like a targe and buckler since it has twin straps.

It's now January and there is nothing good to say. I scrapped Hopes and Dreams but am planning to redo it titled "Hopes and Dreams Redux". Also, my poor cat of 18 years died last month on December 16, 2012. Times are a bit rough for me as the desire to work has basically been sapped from me. That and my striker carriage project has been scrapped due to sizing errors. The house is on pause until I can get some trimming to make the walls and my stop motion projects are taking up too much room to do really anything. Maybe things will pick up in the spring. In the mean time, I think it be a good time to tell you my plans for the year.

*Buy 2 F-14 1/100 kits. Make a striker set.
*Using CADD and use of a 3-d printer, make striker carriage
*Using CADD and use of a 3-d printer, make Harkonnen 2.
*Buy materials to finish house.
*Create new shield for Saber.
*Finish current M1A1 Abrams Striker.
*Redesign M1A1 Striker based on current artwork using CADD and 3-d printer.
*Make a steampunk themed exo-frame.
*Create new room for stop motion set.

There is still plenty for me to do but I am still recovering from the loss of my dear friend. Thanks for the 5000+ views and have a good day.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dear friend. It's not a feeling we can logically sweep away when they leave us. I hope you can focus on fond memories.

If it helps, I'd like to mention your stuff has been an inspiration for me to start working on some crazy designs for custom stuff as well. I have a cool drawing of a steam punk themed mecha musume that I was working on BEFORE I realized shinkis existed. I might post that up eventually if you are interested. Good luck with all this stuff..

I would be interested in seeing it. Right now, all I have are a few ideas. This includes a Nicola Tesla coil like ray gun that is back mounted and the barrel swings down over the shoulder as the right arm has a gatling that is belt fed and is powered by some form of boiler on a gyro that is also on the back as the left arm is made up of gears, pistons, cables and what not as the rest of the thing will be made to look like its riveted. I know I can do it but I need to get off my lazy butt to draw it.

Oh let the evil laughter begin. After how many years of searching, she's mine!

Thank you. Now I have another surprise. HLJ had one HECK of a bargain deal from Bandai and this included AGP's of both Yoshika and Mio so ... I GOT THEM BOTH! Oh yeah. Both on here and on the Strike Witches thread, I will post pics. Until then, peace out.

Okay, this is just weird. Neither of my packages arrived and photobucket is not loading on my main computer. Shame really because I need a favor. I have some pics that I need to upload that are reference picks for the steam powered exo-frame, the Vermillion. Does anyone have a Mami Tomoe? Since she is a western themed gunner, I was planning on building an exo-frame that is steampunkish in design and make.
The following are reference pics using Lynette but I need those angles of Mami so I can design on paper the cockpit and such. The plan is to design well ahead of time so when I do get her, all of the measurements and such are in place. Also, Lynette is as busty as Mami so that helps some.
