Hm. Seeing as Shinki are pretty blatantly mass-produced...

I can't understand a word spoken in japanese, so I can only guess at things, but.

Was that the main character's Strarf in the first scene? And also, what became of the Eukrante? Underground shinki bloodsports, oh my.

And while the middle part was fun fluff, the last thirty seconds was worrying. He trusts three of his girls to run free, but keeps the Strarf locked in a padded box. Six inch Hannibal Lechter. Oh, dear.

So do we spin dark or light? Is this where his three happy girls get dragged into the dark seedy world of Shinki-smashing duels to the death, or will it be a lengthy humanization story where they force a soul into Strarf, kicking and screaming at every tea party and happy flower scene, until the locked-in-a-box killer goes all domestic?

Subs are out!

Something else I noticed...
The Strarf in the beginning of the episode has yellow eyes, not red.

Hum. Okay, having found subs:

Apparently getting run through and EXPLODING is a minor inconvenience. It reads like that WAS the same Eukrante. (Good, too, because the connotation otherwise...)

Also, rage-filled battles of honour, justice and singed letters come to a screeching halt when daddy's coming home.

And who the heck was the shipping company? Dumping your freight on TOP of the receiver is not a good way to get repeat business.

Although that scene DOES give an interesting insight into the legal status of a Shinki in this universe. Dude's going to high school, which implies he's a legal minor. Parents are at least seven to eight time zones away. Alarm clock woke up Arn at 7 AM, later phone conversation said 'Isn't it midnight there?' I know japanese kids are on the ball about everything, but I'd assume that there was a bit of time not shown; If we assume it's closer to eight, that'd put his parent(s) in the UK time zone, likely London because the UK is London AND NOTHING ELSE. Just like how the US is only New York, LA, and Farming Midwest Hometown, and Canada is Igloos. If he DID get on the phone right away, Dad is in Europe somewhere. Or South Africa. Or Egypt.

Or Libya.

Anyways, far enough away that a minor is on his own, but with a trio of six inch helper robots, that's A-OK! So Shinki can act as legal guardians? Also, the moving company rep handed the invoice to Arnval to sign, so they've got legal authority to sign payment documents. Combined with the three of them buying the groceries next ep, that means they're allowed to handle money in most situations. That's pretty intriguing right there. Are Shinki possibly considered full citizens?

Of course, the big stinger at the end: 'Hey, I don't recognize this black box.' DUN DUN DUN.

My assessment on the first episode after watching the unsubbed one. (since subs are optional in my case)

*I like how they turned Eukrante (Clara) into a short-fused but still serious character. That sort suits CV Emiri Kato's style more.

*Lenne and Aines could have gotten better names. Model name derivatives reek of lazy.

*Typical formula for a protagonist with robots: The black-framed eyeglass computer nerd. Rhito reminds me a bit of Yuuto from Nogizaka Haruka No Himitsu, lol. I liked the protagonist from Blade's manga better.

*That hamster gets everywhere!

*Lenne: Busty + Blonde + Clumsy + Loves Making Costumes = A match made in heaven.

*Ann's existence in Rhito's childhood kinda throws the timeline off a bit. In the game's story canon, Arnval MkIIs were supposedly developed in 2036 (the starting timeline for Battle Masters and BM MkII). Though the fact that the current year isn't mentioned here will allow for some leeway.

*I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't use the original narrative. Here they're introduced as battle robots from the get-go, whereas in the original they were initially developed as companion robots, with battling only later gaining popularity.

*As if the ROG from the game wasn't Yu Gi Oh-ish enough, they had to introduce portable field generators.

Got home late, so wasnt able to do much but skim through the episodes, but I like what I saw.

Looks like they toned down Atlene's -desu spam a bit. That'll relieve quite a few people.
Was the noise they used while summoning/attaching their armor the same as the BR/BM noise? Cute touch if so.

Watched the first episode; definitely looks to be a cute series. I feel sorry for the Eukrante; she needs to learn to avoid melee range with Strarf. Also, did anyone notice the hamster was chewing on a cord at one point? The electrical engineer in me says that hamster needs a cage.

Nutjob brought up an interesting point; Shinki obviously pass Turing tests, so it's not unreasonable that they've been granted some form of legal status as people (if a corporation can be a person, so can a 6-inch robot). That said, given the relative age/maturity levels of the Shinki, I doubt any of them could qualify for "legal guardian" status any more than the protagonist; perhaps laws like that have changed slightly?

All in all, definitely looking forward to the next episode. I see that Anime Network's announced a simulcast, but their schedule is still TBA. Are the current subs out there fansubs? I'm not looking for a download link, just a status.

Yeah, guardianship status might be pushing it, but they're apparently allowed to sign contracts (the shipping invoice) and can handle money (again, the invoice and next episodes' groceries shopping.)

But I hope something's explained for the guardianship status of the kid.

Interesting to note: Kid goes to school, Shinki stay home. (Tiny Robot Combat Housewives!) Are they toys or Life Assistants? Are educational institutions afraid they'll be distractions, or would they constitute cheating? Would a properly trained/programmed specialist Shinki qualify as a Teaching Assistant for students with learning disabilities? If so, would they be the child's or the teacher's Shinki? Or the school's?

So many questions. What IS the legal status of a Shinki? They're a consumer product, but they completely destroy the Turing test. If a Shinki Master is Planelegs, do the Shinki have a right to ditch 'em? Abused Shinki Shelters? Should I get more sleep before posting?

Also: VAMPIRE ORANGE JUICE.
